November is here, bringing crunchy leaves, cooler weather, early sunsets, and the official kickoff to the holiday season. It’s also a time when many common pet problems pop up (often involving food, cold weather, and seasonal chaos), so we’ve put together a helpful guide to keep your furry family members safe, cozy, and happy all season long. 1. Thanksgiving Food: What’s Safe and What’s Not Between turkey, pies, casseroles, and those irresistible smells, pets are on high alert this month. Before those puppy-dog eyes win you over… Safe holiday treats (in moderation!) ✔ Plain cooked turkey breast (no skin, no bones) ✔ Plain green beans ✔ Cooked carrots ✔ Pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling) Foods to avoid—a big NOPE! ❌ Turkey bones (splinter hazard) ❌ Fatty skin, gravy, butter-heavy dishes ❌ Onions, garlic, leeks (very toxic) ❌ Chocolate, grapes/raisins, xylitol ❌ Stuffing (so many hidden ingredients that are unsafe) If your pet sneaks something suspicious, call us right away — holiday mishaps are more common than you think! ❄️ 2. The Weather Is Cooling Off: Time for Winter Wellness Tips Dogs and cats handle chilly weather differently, but all pets can use a little extra support this season. For dogs: • Keep walks shorter on very cold days. • Invest in a comfy sweater for small or short-haired pups. • Wipe paws after walks on treated roads and sidewalks — fall and winter chemicals can irritate paw pads. For cats: • Outdoor cats may seek warmth under cars. Tap your hood before starting the engine. • Create cozy indoor “nests” for older cats—they feel temperature drops more intensely. 😺 3. Senior Pets: November Is a Great Time for Wellness Checks Just like humans, pets become a little more vulnerable as they age. This month, we encourage pet parents to schedule wellness exams for senior pets (age 7+ for most dogs and cats). Your veterinarian can check for early signs of arthritis, dental disease, thyroid changes, and other age-related conditions. Catching issues early keeps your pet comfortable all winter long! 🐶 4. Holiday Travel With Pets: Plan Ahead! Heading out of town for Thanksgiving or a holiday getaway? • Make sure vaccinations are up to date. • Check with airlines to see if you need travel certificates if you’re flying. • If you are flying internationally, let us know ASAP since each country has different travel requirements. • Bring a familiar blanket or toy to ease your pet’s stress. • If your pet gets anxious during travel, we can help with calming strategies or medications. 🧡 We’re Grateful for You As we reflect on what we’re thankful for this season, our team is truly grateful for your trust and for the joy your pets bring into our hospital every day. From wiggly puppies to dignified senior cats—we love them all! If you need to schedule an appointment, ask a question, or just want to share a cute pet photo (yes, please!), we’re here for you. Happy November! 🍂 Comments are closed.
